Transgender directors Lilly Wachowski and Lana Wachowski, the famous duo behind the Matrix movies, are among the 683 people who became Oscar voters this week.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made a concerted effort this year to expand its membership and make it more diverse.
The Academy has been criticized heavily for being too white male dominant in its membership.
There was outrage when, for the second consecutive year, the four acting categories had all white nominees.
Of the new members, 46% are female and 41% are people of color.
New member Lana Wachowski came out as transgender in 2012 while her sister did earlier this year after being confronted by a tabloid.
‘There’s a critical eye being cast back at my and Lana’s work through the lens of our transness,’ Lilly said in April when she accepted the GLAAD Media Award prize for Outstanding Drama Series for Sense8.
‘This is a cool thing because it’s an excellent reminder that art is never static. And while the ideas of identity and transformation are critical components in our work, the bedrock that all ideas rest upon is love.’
Also new to the Academy is openly gay director Xavier Dolan whose films include Heartbeats, Laurence Anyways, Mommy and It’s Only the End of the World.
