Texas Pride picnic called off due to threat of violence

The Pride Community Center of College Station, Texas calls off annual picnic

Organizers of a yearly pride event in College Station, Texas are calling the event off due to a threat of violence posted on social media.

The Pride Community Center made the announcement yesterday, 2 July, on Facebook.

‘The Pride Picnic, scheduled for next Sunday, [10 July], has been postponed,’  the group wrote. ‘Pride received a threat of violence and while the police and FBI are actively investigating, the Board of Directors deemed it best to be hold the picnic.at a future date.We hope that our LGBTQA+ community and allies will join us at that time for an even bigger event. We’ll see you then!’

According to KBTX, a local television news station, a flier advertising the event was reposted with the following comment: ‘Lock and load. Time to make the news.’

In a statement released by the College Station Police Department, the threat was made on Tumblr. After receiving information from the center, ‘CSPD investigators, in conjunction with the FBI, began attempting to identify the source of the threat. A subpoena was served on Tumblr requesting information to identify the poster.’

The police statement adds that as of 1 July, ‘Tumblr had not responded to the subpoena.’ Because event organizers could not determine if the threat was credible, the picnic was called off,  ‘in the interest of public safety.’

‘Despite the cancellation, CSPD investigators will continue to follow up on the situation and will work with the FBI to identify any potential charges,’ the police statement said.

Kay Dennis, the  president of the center, told KBTX the picnic is the organization’s largest event of the year.

‘Food, games, the park…people visiting and making new friends,’ Dennis said. ‘This is not something we want to come to an end.’

The center was created in 2010; the picnic began in 2011. College Station, the home of Texas A&M University, is located approximately 90 miles northwest of Houston.
