Dad, meet my prom date: Son comes out in moving short film from Hallmark Cards

In the Hallmark film, a son introduces his prom date to his dad

Feeln – the online streaming service owned by Hallmark Cards – has just released a moving short film, The Beginning, about a son coming out to his dad.

In the film, a nervous teen informs his sports-loving dad – who had thought his boy was going to prom without a date – that his date is actually the guy driving him.

At that moment the son’s date turns up at the door. The father has seconds in which to process his feelings and decide how to react.

Feeln was launched in 2007 as SpiritClips, but was bought by Hallmark Cards in 2012. It now specializes in streaming family-friendly and true-life movies to its monthly subscribers. It also produces its own short films and documentaries.

One of those who features in the film, actor Pedro Correa, who plays the son, commented online, ‘It was an honor to be able to throw myself into a character and a story with such a great message behind it.’

Hallmark, headquartered in Kansas City, scored the top mark of 100 in the most recent Corporate Equality Index from Human Rights Campaign, which ranks Fortune500 companies on their LGBT friendly practices and policies.

The company has produced other short films featuring same-sex couples as part of its Valentine’s Day advertising campaigns.

Feeln, headquartered in Los Angeles, has been approached for further comment.
