Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson was arrested during a Baton Rouge, Louisiana protest

Out Black Lives Matter activist DeRay Mckesson was released today, 10 July after spending a night in a Baton Rouge, Louisiana jail.

Yesterday he participated in a rally protesting the police related death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling.  According to ABC News, hundreds were part of yesterday’s demonstration.

Mckesson was arrested as he was filming the march, walking alongside Airline Highway. He claims he was charged with obstruction of a roadway.

Presently his bail amount is unknown.

‘The protesters were peaceful last night, the police were not,’ the Black Lives Matter activist said to the Washington Post. ‘I came to stand in solidarity with the people who stood in solidarity with us. I was with local activists when I was arrested yesterday. I was in compliance with the law, and I am confident that this was an unlawful arrest.’

On Twitter, Mckesson accused Baton Rouge police of trying to disrupt a peaceful protest.

In the past week, relations between law enforcement and communities have been frayed. There is the death Sterling. On 6 July, Philando Castile was fatally shot by St. Anthony police officer (the aftermath was filmed, and posted on social media, by Castile’s girlfriend).

St. Anthony is a suburb of Saint Paul, Minnesota.

In Dallas, Micah Johnson killed five police officers at the end of a police brutality rally. The suspect was killed by police, by robot controlled bomb,  as he hid in a parking garage.
