Looking creator on how he settled the Patrick-Richie-Kevin love triangle

The finale of Looking has Patrick realizing who it is he really loves.

If you haven’t seen Looking: The Movie at one of its film festival screenings in San Francisco or Los Angeles – and want to remain in the dark over what happens – then please do not read any further.

You have now been officially warned of spoiler alerts that will appear in this article.

Gay Star News attended the screening of the finale at Outfest in Los Angeles over the weekend after which series creator Michael Lannan took to the stage to talk about the end of a franchise near and dear to his heart.

‘I want it (to be remembered) as the best television show ever made,’ he told the audience at the Directors Guild of America. ‘I hope it kind of speaks to a moment in time. Things have changed so quickly in the last 10 years. We wanted to have people living their lives in a moment in time.’

The finale of the beloved HBO series will premiere on 23 July and in it, Patrick (Jonathan Groff) returns to San Francisco after nine months away for a friend’s wedding.

He has begun a new life in Colorado and feels that he has left the drama and heartbreak of his relationships with hairdresser Richie (Raul Castillo) and his former boss Kevin (Russell Tovey) behind.

The movie has Patrick contacting Kevin during hos visit to meet for coffee. Kevin is in now mood for polite chit chat and tells Patrick some hard truths about himself.

As part of the wedding festivities for Augustin (Frankie J. Alvarez) and Eddie (Daniel Franzese), Patrick and Richie catch up and it’s clear the attraction and the feelings are still there.

‘I’ll probably be getting a lot of angry tweets from Kevin fans,’ Lannan said. ‘We always thought (Patrick and Richie) was a really special relationship and it kind of drove the show. Richie was a really important catalyst for Patrick. We just really loved the chemistry between Jonathan and Raul and it grew and grew.

‘Richie was someone who was very vivid to us … he fit in nicely in the end.’

Lannan said there was a storyline mapped out for a season three that had to be partly truncated and partly thrown out because of HBO canceling the show after two seasons due to low ratings.

That season would have included a love story for Dom (Murray Bartlett) and ‘we talked about someone new for Patrick to come in and take him to another direction). There was also a possibility the Eddie and Augustin would have adopted a transgender child from the shelter where Eddie works.

No matter what the ratings are for the movie, Lannan said it is ‘unlikely’ the series would ever be revived. But he says ‘we would love to do’ another movie.
