Trump introduces Pence as his vice presidential running mate

Donald Trump officially introduces his vice president running mate, Governor Mike Pence

Donald Trump and Mike Pence are now a political couple. Today, 16 July, the presumptive Republican nominee for the White House introduced Indiana governor as his vice vice presidential running mate.

‘He fights for the people, and he’s going to fight for you. He’s a solid, solid person,’ Trump said in his 28-minute introduction, according to The Hill.

‘He’s really got the skills of a highly talented executive, leading the state of Indiana to jobs, growth and opportunity despite the obstacles in his state’s way … by the way of the Obama administration,’ Trump continued. ‘Mike Pence is a man of honor, character and honesty.’

The selection of Pence is seen as an attempt  by the presidential nominee to being the party together, two days before the nominating convention begins. The reality star/businessman admitted this in his speech.

‘One of the biggest reasons I’ve chosen Mike, one of the reasons is party unity, I have to be honest,’ the candidate confessed.

Pence is a shining star with the GOP base. Last year he signed the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, allowing businesses, and individuals,  in the state to deny services to LGBTI people.

In 2000, when running for a seat in the House of Representatives, Pence argued money from the Ryan White HIV and AIDS Program should be redirected to ‘gay cure’ organizations.

Before the vice presidential candidate could finish his speech the Human rights Campaign, the largest LGBTI civil rights group in the US, used Twitter to slam Pence for his anti-gay equality positions.

As for candidate Pence, he shied from social  issues in his statement. Instead, he praised Trump and went after Hillary Clinton, the presumptive nominee for the Democratic Party.

‘Americans can choose a leader who will fight to make America safe and prosperous again and bring real change, or we can elect someone who literally personifies the failed establishment in Washington, D.C,’ Pence said.
