Marriage equality is spreading around the globe, carrying with it a message of love and acceptance.
Just over a year ago, there were 390,000 same-sex marriages registered in the US – spread over those states who allowed them.
Then 26 June came along, and with it the Supreme Court’s monumental ruling to open marriage to everyone, in all 50 states.
To celebrate the occasion, PrideLoveisLove.com released rainbow-colored bracelets to commemorate the occasion, wrapped in a wedding white box and accompanied with a silver stamped card, carrying the judgment’s now world-famous last words: ‘They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.’
Since that historic day, another 500,000 couples have tied the knot, according to the Washington Post, which brings the total of same-sex marriages to nearly one million.
That number already feels huge enough as it is, but in the grand scheme of things, it is a small percentage of the total LGBT community.
Consider that 3.8% of the United States’ citizens identify as LGBT. That could mean that, across all states, there are up to 12,312,882 million people – or more – who have the same rights as their straight friends when it comes to love.
Imagine that – there are enough gay people in the US to fill the entire state of Ohio, or nearly fill the state of Pennsylvania; 12 million people are enough to fill a medium-sized country, even.
And they are now allowed to marry their partners.
The SCOTUS ruling shows that gay couples are just like everyone else and promotes the idea of equality. By turning gay couples into equals, it’s taken one of the most crucial steps towards love and acceptance.
In the end, love is love.
