TR Knight is returning to series television with a recurring role on the ABC drama The Catch that has been written especially for him.
The out actor spent five seasons playing Dr. George O’Malley on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy before leaving the medical drama seven years ago. His exit was handled by his character being killed off.
This return reunites him with Shonda Rhimes, the creator and executive producer of both shows.
‘This has been a thrilling secret to keep!’ Rhimes in a statement to TV Line.
‘One of my favorite family members is home!’
Knight, in a statement of his own, says working with Rhimes and her Shondaland team again ‘fills me with immense joy.’
Nothing has been revealed about Knight’s character on The Catch which begins its second season in the fall.
Knight is an Emmy nominated actor who since his stint on Grey’s has had a recurring role on the CBS drama The Good Wife, appeared in the Hulu series 11.22.63 and is part of the upcoming ABC miniseries When We Rise.
When Knight began his run on Grey’s Anatomy more than a decade ago, he was not openly gay.
But after former co-star Isaiah Washington referred to him as a ‘faggot’ during an on-set fight with Patrick Dempsey, Knight issued a public statement confirming he is gay.
Washington was later fired from the show.
Knight, 43, married Patrick Leahy in 2013.
