A mass shooting happened at a nightclub in Fort Myers, Florida, on Monday, leaving two dead and more than 18 others injured.
Police first responded to the scene at Club Blu Bar and Grill at 12.30 am, where a beach-themed teen party was held.
Upon arrival, officers located several victims who were shot, their injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening.
Sean Archilles, 14, and Stef’An Strawder, 18, were found fatally shot in the club’s parking lot, Fort Myers police said.
The shooting had happened in the club’s parking lot. There were 70 to 80 people inside the club at the time of the shooting, reports WINK-TV.
Police said that there were victims who left the scene on their own to seek treatment at local area hospitals.
According to Lisa Sgarlata, the Chief Administration Officer of Lee Memorial Hospital, more than 18 people were wounded in the shooting.
A total of 16 people were treated in the trauma center and emergency department of Lee Memorial Hospital.
Most victims were discharged by late Monday morning, but four remained hospitalised — two were in fair condition and two were in critical condition.
‘This is not something we’re used to — not in this type of volume by any stretch,’ said Lee Memorial trauma surgeon Dr. Andrew W. Mikulaschek, reports NBC News. ‘I have been here 17 years… in terms of gunshot wound victims, this is the worse I’ve ever seen.’
Victims were reported to be between the age of 12 and 27.
Police have confirmed that the incident is not an act of terror, but investigators are still working to determine the motive.
Club Blu released a statement on its Facebook page (which has been deactivated) saying that the event was supposed to be a safe space for teens to have fun.
‘We are deeply sorry for all involved,’ the club said. ‘We tried to give the teens what we thought was a safe place to have a good time. Ages 12-17.’
The club also described that the venue had its security measures: ‘There was armed security as well as full security, inside and out.’
According to WINK-TV, there were ‘eight unarmed security guards at Club Blu during the event, as well as two armed guards in the parking lot and another armed guard at the door.’
Two of the guards were reportedly among the victims wounded.
Club Blu also added that it was closing and parents were picking their children up when the shooting happened.
‘There was nothing more we could [have] done,’ the club added.

Two other crime scenes connected to the shooting were identified, and three persons of interest have been detained, reports ABC News.
The shooting came slightly over a month after the Orlando gay nightclub massacre which killed 49 people and injured 53 others, making it the most deadly mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
