Chelsea Clinton is speaking out against anti-LGBTI conversion therapy at the Democratic National Convention.
The former and possibly future First Daughter is the daughter of former US President Bill Clinton and current Democratic Party presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.
She told LGBTI delegates at the convention on Wednesday (27 July) that she finds the Republican Party adopting a platform that supports conversion therapy last week ‘offensive.’
‘The open embrace of conversion therapy in the Republican Party platform ― in other words, child abuse ― to me is the clarion call for all of us to do everything we can to elect my mom, and elect Democrats up and down the ticket,’ Clinton said.
The GOP platform states that parents should be free to make medical decisions, including conversion therapy, about their children without interference.
In May, Vermont joined California, New Jersey, Oregon, Illinois, New York, Washington D.C., and Cincinnati in banning the controversial practice for minors.
These laws are designed to protect youth from mental health providers attempting to change their sexual orientation or gender identity. The practices are linked to substance abuse, extreme depression, and suicide.
Clinton said her mom would ban conversion therapy on a federal level.
Clinton said she found the Republican rhetoric overall to be ‘divisive, degrading, demeaning … It was the most regressive, least inclusive platform in modern political history.’
