Eva Longoria took the main stage of the 2016 Democratic National Convention on Monday and destroyed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump for his racist and ignorant comments about Mexico and Mexican immigrants in the U.S.
Since the start of his presidential campaign last year, Trump has made disparaging comments about immigrants, especially Latinos, and has even proposed building a ‘great wall’ along the Mexican border.
On the first night of the DNC, Longoria said that she as a Mexican-American from Texas is deeply offended by the discriminatory notions that Trump is putting forth.
‘Like many of you, this election is very personal to me,’ Longoria said. ‘I’m from a small town in South Texas and if you know your history, Texas used to be part of Mexico. Now, I’m ninth generation American. My family never crossed a border, the border crossed us!’
The former Desperate Housewives actress then pointed out that Trump and his campaign aren’t just an attack on Mexicans, but also the disabled and women. She said:
‘So when Donald Trump calls us criminals and rapists, he’s insulting American families. My father is not a criminal or rapist, in fact, he’s a United States veteran.
‘When Trump cruelly mocked a disabled reporter, he was also mocking my special-needs sister Lisa and many like her.
‘When he said that a wife who works is a very dangerous thing, he not only insulted me, he insulted my mother who worked as a special-education teacher for 30 years, raised four children while being a wife!’
Longoria then gave her endorsement of Hillary Clinton as her presidential nominee of choice, not without reminding the crowd of the work Clinton has done in areas such as healthcare reform, gun safety, and women’s rights.
‘I believe in the candidate who believes in all of us, and that candidate is Hilary Clinton.’
The Latino actress also highlighted that the convention displayed great diversity in terms of its speakers, before handing the stage over to New Jersey Senator Cory Booker who is black.
In fact, 11 out of 24 — almost half — of the speakers at the first night of the DNC were people of color. That’s more than the entire 2016 Republican National Convention‘s number of speakers of color.
