Why Wentworth Miller spoke out about body shaming

Wentworth Miller was closeted during run of Prison Break.

As he juggles roles on TV’s Prison Break and Legends of Tomorrow, Wentworth Miller is back in peak shape.

But there was a time, not that long ago, when he gained weight during a hiatus from acting and got publicly fat-shamed online because of it.

Miller spoke out after he saw a mean meme posted by the site LAD Bible featuring side by side before and after photos with the caption: ‘When you break out of prison and find out about the McDonald’s Monopoly.’

Miller took to Facebook to share how it made him feel and the depression he was going through during the weight gain in 2010.

Further complicating things was the fact that he was a closeted gay man.

‘I was having a really strong emotional experience and I needed to get it out,’ Miller tells People.com of his Facebook post. ‘Articulating how I’m feeling, that’s a life-saving practice. And it’s part of my self-care.’

‘I knew whoever was responsible didn’t know me or know anything about me,” Miller says. ‘They didn’t have a clue what kinds of issues they were bringing up for me.’

The actor, 44, came out publicly in 2013 when he declined an invitation to Petersburg Film Festival because of Russia’s anti-LGBTI laws.

Of that experience that led him to go public Miller says: ‘I was grateful.’
