Jared Leto plays The Joker in the new movie Suicide Squad but it’s another film role that some people are still talking about.
The actor won an Academy Award in 2013 for his performance as Rayon, a drug addicted, HIV-positive trans woman in Dallas Buyers Club.
In a new Rolling Stone profile, Dallas Buyers Club director Jean-Marc Vallée recalls his first conversation with Leto about the part in a Skype call.
Leto, who had taken more than five years off from acting to focus on his music career was already in character as Rayon.
‘He was dressed as a woman and he was hitting on me,’ Vallée says. ‘And he kept it up for 25 minutes.’
Once filming began, Vallée says he and the film’s lead, Matthew McConaughey, never met Leto on set.
They only encountered Rayon.
The director found this disconcerting and wasn’t even sure which pronoun to use when addressing Leto.
‘He got me out of my comfort zone,’ Vallée says. ‘I didn’t know how to address him or her because he was such a lady. He was such a girl, and he was sexy!’
Vallée also recalls an anecdote involving McConaughey who played an initially homophobic character.
The director says that one day as Leto was shimmying onto the set as Rayon McConaughay said to him: ‘I don’t know whether to kick your ass or fuck it!’
