Christopher Biggins banned from LGBTI events until he says sorry to bisexuals

Christopher Biggins will have to climb down from his anti-bi comments if he is to regain his crown as the UK’s LGBTI compere-in-chief.

Organizations including leading LGBT campaigners Stonewall and Peter Tatchell Foundation and top HIV organization THT have long used Biggins as a go-to host for their events and galas.

And he entered Celebrity Big Brother as a ‘national treasure’.

But LGBTI Britain was shocked when he attacked bisexuals.

Speaking in the Big Brother house, Biggins said: ‘The worst type I’m afraid to say are the bisexuals. What it is is people not wanting to admit they’re gay.’

The remarks are surprising for an openly-gay man whose coolest claim to fame is his part in the bisexual-embracing movie version of the Rocky Horror Show.

But they are not the first time he has made biphobic comments.

In 2014 he told The Big Issue: ‘The world is full of bisexuals because that’s the way they want to do it. What do they do? They ruin a woman’s life. It’s so wrong, because you’re not owning up to what you are.’

He has also spoken against same-sex marriage equality and said he is a big fan of Margaret Thatcher who banned education about LGBTI issues in schools, blighting a generation.

This time, however, people are making a stand, Gay Star News can exclusively reveal.

Biggins has long been the auctioneer at Stonewall’s glittering gala dinner, the country’s biggest LGBTI fundraising night. But no more.

A Stonewall spokesperson said: ‘Christopher Biggins has been a longstanding supporter of Stonewall and has donated his time and energy to our annual Equality Dinner for nearly a decade, for which we are extremely grateful.

‘However, his most recent comments have been extremely difficult to hear, and underline the problems that the bi community face.

‘We have no future commitments planned with Christopher. Before engaging him in our work again we would need to explore this incident with him so we can ensure that it is clear why this was offensive and unacceptable.

‘Our relationship with our supporters is based on their understanding of our mission to achieve acceptance without exception for every lesbian, gay, bi and trans person, and their willingness to help us achieve this.’

Britain’s most famous LGBTI activist, Peter Tatchell was even more outspoken, despite his foundation’s past work with Biggins.

Tatchell told GSN: ‘Christopher’s comment is offensive and contributes to bisexual erasure. Sexuality is not a simple binary of gay and straight.

‘A high proportion of people are bisexual or have a bisexual potential. Biphobia is as bad as homophobia and transphobia. It has no place in the LGBT community.

‘The Peter Tatchell Foundation cannot support anyone who holds such ignorant, prejudiced views. I urge Christopher to apologize. Some people are bisexual. Get over it.’

GSN has also spoken to several other charities and organizations who are considering dropping Biggins but are not yet ready to make a public statement.
