Young Americans overwhelmingly support gay people adopting kids

LGBTI parenting is becoming more commonplace across the US

A new survey has found that young people in the US show great support for LGBT rights.

At the same time, only a minority consider such issues to be among the priorities facing the country.

The GenForward study was conducted by the Black Youth Project at the University of Chicago with The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. It surveyed 1,940 adults age 18-30. Key findings included:

  • 80% support LGBT adoption
  • 92% support HIV and AIDS prevention
  • 90% support equal employment
  • Furthermore, a majority also supported greater training for police on transgender issues and insurance cover for transgender health issues.

The survey broke the results down into racial groups, and found that support for LGBT adoption had increased across the board over the last two years: up from 69% to 84% for young white people; and 65% to 75% among Hispanics.

However, although supportive of LGBT rights, just 6% considered LGBT issues to be among the top issues facing the US (rising to 17% for those who self-identified as LGBT).

The greatest issues facing the US, among those surveyed, include racism (28%), terrorism and homeland security (25%), education (24%), police brutality (22%) and gun control (21%).

Christie Cocklin, 27, a multiracial American from Providence, Rhode Island, told AP.

‘People who don’t identify as heterosexual are human like we are, and should be entitled to the same kind of rights. I have friends who are LGBT and I feel that it’s discrimination to not allow them adoption or employment or whatever.’

In May, adoption by gay and lesbian people became law in all 50 states of the US, after anti-LGBTI campaigners in Mississippi failed to have a ban enforced in that state. Hillary Clinton was amongst the first to tweet her joy at the news.

According to 2013 data analysis from the Williams Institute of Los Angeles, an estimated 16,000 same-sex couples are raising more than 22,000 adopted children in the US – based on 2010 Census figures. That figure is likely to have increased greatly in subsequent years as same-sex adoption became legal across the 50 states.

Although same-sex adoption is now legal across the US, LGBTI advocates are pushing for the passing of a federal Equality Act. The act would effectively expand the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include protection for LGBT people, offering protections in areas including employment.
