Swimmer Adam Peaty just snatched the first gold medal for Great Britain at the Rio Olympic Games.

And not only did the 21-year-old come in first in the men’s 100 metre breaststroke event, he also set a world record of 57.13 seconds.

Peaty is also the first British male swimmer to bring home an Olympic gold medal in 28 years. The last was by Adrian Moorhouse who won the same event at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, Korea.

‘It’s so surreal to get Team GB’s first gold – it’s a product of seven years of work,’ Peaty told BBC, ‘I came out tonight and took the first 50 easy and came back with everything I have got. More importantly, I did it for my country and that means so much for me.’
