Castro café announces it will close this weekend

Eureka will close this Sunday

A gay-run coffee and artisan ice-cream store in San Francisco’s Castro district has announced that this Sunday (14 August) will be its last day of trading.

‘Eureka! will be closing its doors for the final time on Sunday – August 14th. It has been a glorious three year run. Thank YOU. Anne, Patrick and Bill,’ said a statement on the Facebook page of Eureka, at 451 Castro Street.

Bay Area Reporter says that the café, which opened in 2013, suffered a downturn in custom when the city decided to undertake extensive street works in 2014 to expand the sidewalks. Although the work has now been completed and the café attracts some passing tourists, locals have been slower to return.

Business co-owner Patrick Batt, who also runs the nearby vintage porn store Auto Erotica, told BAR: ‘The irony is that we were just getting our business going right before the build out of the new sidewalks. The traffic never returned.’

The arrival of several other cafes in the area have also made competition more intense. Batt’s business partner, Bill Singleton, said he was open to idea of relaunching Eureka elsewhere in the city should he find suitable premises.

Like other major gay hotspots, such as London and New York, San Francisco has seen a number of losses in its LGBT neighborhood.

In June and July alone, ten Castro restaurants and retails businesses closed or announced their forthcoming closure, including Books Inc, M&G Merch and Entour. Most have been driven out by rapid rent rises.

The most high-profile casualty could be the 50-year old, iconic Stud bar. Its owner announced in early July that the venue is likely to close in early September following a 300% rent increase and his desire to relocate to Hawaii to care for his elderly mother. A campaigning co-op group, Save Our Stud has been launched to try and take over the business.
