A straight journalist is under fire for tricking closeted gay athletes at the Rio Olympics to out themselves to him on Grindr.
Nico Hines, who is covering the Games for the Daily Beast, went on gay dating apps to convince athletes to hit on him in the Olympic village.
‘Athlete profiles on the various apps during my short exploration included a Brazilian track star, an Italian volleyball player, a South American record-holder in the pool, a sailor from New Zealand, a British diver, and a handball player from a notoriously homophobic country,’ he said.
‘One athlete left a drop pin in the heart of the village for me to follow, another said they would be waiting, dressed in black, near the coffee machine in the athletes’ restaurant. A friendly gentleman from Team Kazakhstan even volunteered the address of his building.’
Hines claimed he didn’t ‘lie’ to anyone on the app and used a picture of his face despite not volunteering the information he has a wife and child.
He then went onto give information that could easily identify many of the athletes he encountered, but not their names.
Readers of the article have reacted in outrage who have called it homophobic, irresponsible and dishonest.
Unless queer outing is now an Olympic sport, can we just all agree that @NicoHines piece is outright homophobia? Needs to be withdrawn.

The @NicoHines ‘story’ on Grindr and the olympics village is not journalism. It’s trashy at best and incredibly dangerous at worst.

the private lives, spaces & safety of LGBTI people do not exist for your fluff pieces @NicoHines

Hines and The Daily Beast have not yet responded to the criticism.
