US: Supreme Court upholds California’s ‘gay cure’ therapy ban

The Supreme Court rejected the appeal against California’s ‘gay cure’ ban 0 reader comments

The US Supreme Court has thrown out an appeal against California’s ban on therapy that aims to ‘cure’ homosexuality in under-18s.

The ban was announced by California’s Governor Jerry Brown in September 2012 and aimed to make California the first US state to prohibit psychiatrists, psychologists and counsellors from using sexual-orientation change therapy on those younger than 18.

The “Liberty Counsel”, who launched the appeal, claimed that the law broke the United States constitution’s first amendment: the right to free speech and freedom of religion.

They also claimed that the law infringes on parents’ rights to “direct the upbringing” of their children.

Their case has already been rejected by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

The implementation of the law, which was originally supposed to start in January 2013, had been suspended pending the outcome of this appeal.

Following today’s ruling, the ban can finally come into effect.

Since California introduced the ban, a second state, New Jersey, has followed suit.

The Governor of New Jersey, Chris Christie, was sued over the ban and accused of “banning chastity”.

Gay cure therapy is supported by many on the American right, and was last month adopted into the state platform of the Texas Republicans.

Writing for PinkNews last week, ‘ex-gay’ activist Jeremy Schwab claimed that banning the therapy only hurts people.

Christian group planning to infiltrate Pride and ‘cure’ people of HIV

The group are planning to ‘cure’ anyone with HIV 36 reader comments

A Christian group is planning to infiltrate a Pride event to ‘cure’ people who have HIV.

Evangelical group Trinity Works is planning to infiltrate this weekend’s Twin Cities Pride in Minnesota for “Humility 2014″, in which it claims over 300 outreach workers will be involved.

The group’s leader, Steven Uggen, said: “The Lord really wanted to demonstrate his goodness to this community by releasing healing of HIV and AIDS, so we believe we’re going to see people healed of HIV and AIDS.

“That will be part of our training, just praying with boldness for the releasing of healing power, then sending them back to their doctors literally after praying for them, saying: ‘Here’s what I want you to do: go to your doctor, get tested for HIV or AIDS and when you come back negative, you’ve got a decision to make whether you’re gonna serve the God who just healed you’, and then give them some gospel materials that they can take with them.

“I’m confident that we’re going to have people healed of HIV and AIDS that are going to be contacting us.

“The funny thing is Jesus healed the 10 lepers and only one came back to acknowledge him so there may be 10 that get healed but only one come back, you know.

“This is a strategy that God wants to use so the very fruit of their sin is what he wants to, like, take away to show them his kindness and his goodness. I mean it’s just totally Jesus. I mean it’s like totally his way so we’re excited about that.”

Telegraph boss Lord Black calls on Government to ban gay ‘cure’ therapy

Lord Black of Brentwood called on the Government to ban the practice 11 reader comments

PinkNews Exclusive
The Executive Director of the Telegraph Media Group, Lord Black, has called on the Government to ban the widely condemned practice of gay conversion therapy.

In a written question to the Government, Lord Black of Brentwood asked “whether they are considering introducing legislation to prevent the practice of reparative or conversion therapy on homosexual men and women.”

Earl Howe, The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health, responded this week, to simply say: “This Government does not believe that being lesbian, gay or bisexual is an illness to be treated or cured.”

Speaking to PinkNews, Lord Black reacted to commend the Government for its stance against the practice, but said more needed to be done to ban it.

He said: “I’m pleased that the government is so firmly against the principle of reparative therapy. But we need to do more. It’s time for these terrible practises to be banned by law, and I will be looking for an early opportunity to bring forward legislation on the matter for Parliament to consider.”

The practice of gay “cure”, or “conversion” therapy is widely criticised as harmful to recipients. At least two states in the US have passed legislation banning the practice on minors.

During the debates on same-sex marriage, Lord Black, who helped lead the campaign in the Lords in favour of equality said: “I am in a civil partnership with somebody with whom I have been together for nearly a quarter of a century. I love him very much and nothing would give me greater pride than to marry him.”
